Choreographer Emmalena Fredriksson & filmmaker/new media artist Nancy Lee are presenting their research for a virtual reality dance film with dancers Lexi Vajda, Zahra Shahab and Rianne Švelnis. Virtual reality is an immersive environment that takes over your senses through vision and sound. When putting on a virtual reality headset, you are transported to another world where you can look around by moving your head, and the spacial sound design reinforces the illusion that you are inside the scene. Emmalena & Nancy are interested in exploring what VR can offer to dance presentation by placing the audience in the centre of the performance in an immersive environment. Their process includes developing new ways of choreographing, directing, and filming for a 360 spatial environment. In this presentation, Emmalena will discuss how she conceptualized movement for a 360 spatial environment, how new languages were used to direct dancers, and how the medium transforms relationship between choreographer and dancers; Nancy will share the technological process of building a custom camera rig to shoot in a 360 spatial environment, what the postproduction process is like, and how the medium alters a director's role on set. A demo film with VR headset will be available for attendees to try. This research is supported by The Dance Centre's DanceLab program. We would like to acknowledge production support from Sepehr Samimi and post-production support from Olivier Leroux from Impact VR.
